Preventing ‘Greenlash’: what can we learn from positive climate action?
24 July 2024
“You can’t encourage a Just Transition when livelihoods are not improved”
In cities across the world there has been pushback against green initiatives - or so called ‘greenlash” - because of negative impacts on workers and communities. How can we ensure they are not left behind in the transition to net zero? Where are the examples of positive climate action and what can we learn from them?
IHRB’s Head of Built Environment, Giulio Ferrini and host Deborah Sagoe have been speaking to people working on green transitions in cities around the world.
In this episode of Voices, you will hear from Barbara Steenberger, from the International Union of Tenants; Lionel Van Rillaer the CEO of Inclusio, Paola Cammili, the Global Director of Campaigns at Building and Woodworkers international and Oluwafemi Joshua Ojo, a built environment researcher in Lagos Nigeria, who all share challenges and successes of green initiatives, from problems with ‘renovictions’, to pioneering housing developments driven by the right to housing.
Giulio’s conversations follow the launch of IHRB’s new report: Advancing Just Transitions in a Built Environment - a two year research project exploring green initiatives and people’s rights in eight cities.
