Working in a warzone: what risks do seafarers face?
23 May 2024
When seafarers are caught in armed conflict, how can they be protected?
In this episode, IHRB’s Francesca Fairbairn talks to guests about the safety and security of seafarers during times of conflict. She hears from John Attenborough from Mission to Seafarers, an organisation that provides support and advocates for shipping crew, who shares accounts from seafarers caught up in the attacks on commercial shipping vessels in the Red Sea.
Francesca also speaks to Ian Ralby, an expert in maritime law, who offers an analysis of some of the current maritime threats; insights into complexities of maritime law that can leave seafarers vulnerable; and how shipping companies' responses to attacks on commercial ships have evolved.
