Delivering on seafarers' rights: 2023 Progress Report

The Sustainable Shipping Initiative and the Institute for Human Rights and Business' annual progress report for Delivering on Seafarers' Rights outlines issues and changes faced by seafarers since the launch of the initiative in October 2021.

The report is a comprehensive review with industry insights and observations from a range of stakeholders reflecting on the current challenges facing seafarers, and the shipping industry's effort to address these challenges such as tackling illegal recruitment fees. It also offers recommendations for 2024 and looks at updated trends in the data from the RightShip Crew Welfare Tool.

Stakeholders and organisations who have contributed to the report include: International Seafarers Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN), Nautilus International, Oldendorff Carriers, Rio Tinto, RightShip, and Turtle.

In 2021, IHRB, together with the Sustainable Shipping Initiative and the Rafto Foundation for Human Rights, published the Delivering on seafarers’ rights Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct was accompanied by a self-assessment questionnaire that is also hosted on the RightShip support platform and is intended to provide a guide for shipowners and operators on complying with and improving their performance against, the Code of Conduct.
