Future Green Construction Jobs: skills and decent working conditions
4 June 2024
This comprehensive policy brief developed by the Built Environment team at IHRB in collaboration with BWI explores the evolving landscape of green jobs in the construction sector, highlighting the skills required and the pressing need to improve working conditions.
The policy brief addresses the challenges of the green transition and technological change within the construction industry. It provides critical insights for stakeholders, including workers’ representatives, governments, businesses, and academia, on grounding climate action in social justice. Emphasising the necessity for enhanced working conditions, it aims to guide unions on effective collective bargaining strategies to ensure that the shift towards a greener economy is just and inclusive, benefiting all workers.
Key findings from the report indicate that although green jobs in construction are set to grow, employment trends vary significantly and are slower than predicted in some countries. The report details the impact of this transition on the workforce, geographical changes in employment, the need for new skills and training, and the persistent issues of job quality and safety. Addressing these challenges is crucial to creating decent and accessible green jobs that can meet the demands of net zero future.
