The Social Legacy of Mega-Sporting Events

31 May 2018

On the eve of the FIFA 2018 World Cup, IHRB's Chief Executive John Morrison delivered a speech on the social legacy of mega-sporting events at a high-level meeting of host cities and regions in Moscow on 31st May 2018.

John discusses the discrimination experienced by many groups involved all aspects of sport. He discusses progress made to date in combatting human rights violations, and the work yet to be done.

He asks:

"The social legacy of mega-sporting events is a matter of choice, it is a series of management steps as much as financing or marketing are. Managed well, mega-sporting events can set powerful social legacies, managed poorly, sport can echo or even worsen discrimination in wider society.
