Lessons Learned in Building Better National Action Plans on Business & Human Rights

On 9 February 2016 the Government of Kenya announced its intention to develop a National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (NAP). In addition to this being the first NAP on the African continent, the NAP will also uniquely be underpinned by a constitutional requirement for businesses to comply with the Constitutional Bill of Rights.

IHRB's Nairobi Process has recenly been appointed to the national Steering Committee for the NAP process and has been requested to provide expert support to the Attorney General’s Office for the process.

This submission marks the first input by IHRB's Nairobi Process to the Kenyan NAP process. It seeks to enrich the planning process for the Kenyan NAP by highlighting good practices from a range of countries that have adopted a NAP or are in the process of developing one. It is based on IHRB's own experiences in participating in a number of NAP proceses around the world and a series of conversations with practitioners from the public and private sectors and from civil society who have participated in NAP processes.
