Human Rights and the UN Sustainable Development Goals

10 December 2013

One of the main outcomes of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), held in Rio de Janeiro in June 2012, was the agreement by Member States to launch a process to develop a set of sustainable development goals (SDGs). An Open Working Group (OWG) was created and tasked with defining the content of the SDGs.

The OWG's 6th session will be be held from 6-10 January 2014, focusing on four issues:

  • Means of implementation (science and technology, knowledge-sharing and capacity building)
  • Global partnership for achieving sustainable development
  • Needs of countries in special situations, African countries, LDCs, LLDCs, and SIDS as well as specific challenges facing the middle-income countries
  • Human rights, the right to development, global governance

This IHRB submission focuses on the fourth issue, offering suggestions for better including human rights within the SDGs as well as reflecting the appropriate roles and responsibilities for the private sector.
